The Centre for Health & Sports Medicine (C.H.S.M.)

Mission Statement:

The Centre for Health and Sports Medicine ("C.H.S.M.") is committed to offering the highest quality of care in the areas of both preventive medicine and rehabilitation. The Centre was established in 1997. It was created to meet the needs of the community to help maintain a patient’s quality of life. The primary theme of the Centre is education. The teaching and counselling of our patients is as important as their restoration to good health. The return of the patient's overall quality of life (regardless of whether he/she is part of the general population, an athlete or a worker) is our ultimate goal. The Centre for Health & Sports Medicine's multidisciplinary team is ready to help you achieve your goal.

The C.H.S.M.is owned and medically directed by Dr. Howard A. Winston. As medical director, Dr. Howard Winston has put together a dynamic team of a Certified sports medicine physician, Registered physiotherapists, Certified Athletic Therapists, a very skilled Osteopath, a Registered Dietitian, a Consulting Certified personal trainer, Registered Massage Therapists, a consulting Occupational Therapist, and very experienced and skilled Orthotists. The bracing, Orthotics, and exercise equipment services are provided by Athletic Therapy Services (A.T.S.), an independent company from the CHSM, that provides the Centre’s patients the convenience of having access to both Customized and Non-Customized Bracing and Orthotics. A.T.S. is owned and operated by Mr. Tony Grande and Mr. Richard Obermayer.

The Philosophy of Rehabilitation:

I have added this section to the Centre’s website to help explain to patients the overall concept of Rehabilitation. At the Centre, we are very fortunate to have an exceptional mix of various Therapists, that have great skill and many years of experience. To be a great Therapist, you have to be a good person, with great compassion, and sensitivity, and we fortunate to have some of the best in the country.

It is also important to acknowledge that not every treatment session achieves pain relief. Some sessions causes worse pain, as so much of the world of Rehabilitation is trial and error, and that is to be expected. The communication between the Therapist and the Patient is paramount, critical, so that the Therapist can know what is working, and what needs to be modified.

As a patient, you are paying the Therapist for their time. You are not paying the Therapist for the treatment sessions outcome. The hope, of course, is that with each session we move one step closer to full recovery, and a painless state, but as already stated, a patient who leaves the Centre disgruntled, because they have worse pain and isn’t happy to pay for his/her treatment session, does not understand the concept of Rehabilitation.

Sometimes, the goal of full resolution and/or no pain cannot be achieved without the consultation of a Sports Medicine Doctor, a Specialist, a Surgeon, or some other Healthcare Practitioner with other expertise.

This is why the communication between the Patient, and the treating Therapist is so vital to a positive outcome.

We look forward to the challenge of helping every Patient that walks into the Centre, but it is a cooperative relationship between the Patient and the treating Therapist that will have the best chance of an excellent outcome!

Respectfully submitted,

Howard A. Winston
